By-elections see major growth for Coloured-identity parties

The recent by-elections have seen a massive growth for Coloured identity parties in the Western Cape.

The DA retained Ward 10 in Grabouw with a meagre 28.42% of the vote, with the ANC at 18.76%, EFF at 3.46%, PA at 20.83%, GOOD at 26.15%, and the local PMC at 2.38%.

With the Coloured identity parties totalling 47% of the vote, the DA is survivng by the skin of its teeth, thanks only to the internal divisions within the Coloured identity movement.

Meanwhile, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in the Western Cape won a major victory in the by-election in George, securing Ward 8 with 62.75% of the vote, riding off the back of the community’s frustrations with DA and ANC corruption in the Garden Route.

Helen Zille plans to tour the area on Wednesday, focusing on Knysna, in order to calm voters’ anger about her alleged protection of corrupt municipal managers and elected officials.

This marks a growing trend of support for the PA in the region and reflects voter disillusionment with traditional major parties. The PA's success in George follows previous victories in Johannesburg and Cape Town, showing a shift in political sentiments.

The recent by-elections involved seven municipalities and 45,703 registered voters. The Democratic Alliance (DA) managed to win two wards, one in Grabouw and another in Ekurhuleni.

PA leader Gayton McKenzie praised Coloured voters for their support, while PA deputy president Kenny Kunene expressed excitement over the party's performance in the Western Cape.

George Municipality, where the by-election took place, has around 193,672 residents, with over half being from the Coloured community. In the last election, no single party secured enough seats to rule alone, leading to a coalition government led by the DA with support from the Freedom Front Plus and the African Christian Democratic Party.
