At first, I thought they must be either crazy or simply stupid. Why on earth would the people of the Cape need a new political party? Why do Cape independence supporters simply not work together to achieve independence? Are we not already diluting our chances at this dream just by voting for more than one party?
Surely, we should stand united as the people of the Cape and vote for a single party to ensure our futures and those of generations to come. Perhaps, you may also be contemplating these thoughts.
Maybe this idea of Cape independence is simply too ridiculous for you to swallow, or perhaps you fear that this is yet another racist attempt at gaining white supremacy. It would be only too easy to condemn the movement and label it any number of things without knowing what it is truly about.
Perhaps we might ask ourselves that question about any other party. Do we truly know what they are about? It is common knowledge that political parties usually campaign to sell their ideals to potential supporters by making promises.
Once a party is then voted into power, they should be held accountable to deliver on those promises in gratitude to the supporters who elected them.
However, when a party fails to live up to its own promises, it cannot still expect to rely on the support of their voters. The Democratic Alliance quite frankly cannot be deemed to be “democratic” when it not only fails to hear its own supporters but also fails to keep its word.
In its most fundamental essence, a democracy is a numbers game, where the majority decides the outcome, so when a single party stands in the way of this, the system starts moving away from a democracy towards something different.
The country we call South Africa has had a democratic system since 1994 and its ruling party has been kept in power by its voters in the northern 8 provinces ever since.
After nearly 30 years in power, this party has run this country into the ground. You can simply look around and you will see the cracks growing everywhere. We barely have roads, let alone reliable public transport. Our economy has gone down the drain, and food and fuel prices have gone through the roof!
Evidence of South Africa becoming a failed state is crystal clear. Just one day after we shined bright at the Rugby World Cup final in France our lights dimmed once more back home. This is the country that we live in. A country where the aged are not looked after, the working are taxed to death, and the youth have no prospects of building a future.
It is time for the people of the Western Cape to act. Since the beginning of the democratic era, the majority of the people of the Western Cape have not once elected the party that governs the national government, yet this government still eagerly receives our taxes.
If these funds are then shared at all, and not simply looted, it is disproportionately distributed to areas where the ANC enjoys high levels of support, whilst our own needy people in the Western Cape remain destitute.
We have never voted for the ANC to govern us at the provincial level and for that reason alone we are far better off than the rest of the country, but we lack the power to determine our own future and make our own choices.
During their reign the ANC has milked us for all we have whilst adding to our burden by miserably failing to prevent illegal settlement of people from elsewhere here in the Western Cape.
Yet in the face of this adversity, we have prevailed, and the time has now come to transcend the oppression we have endured and assert our rightful place!
To achieve this, we need our independence and for independence to become a reality we require a referendum. The most obvious way to deliver this is to vote for the Referendum Party. Simply put, a vote for the Referendum Party is unlike any other vote you ever made.
The party is dedicated to a single goal which is to ensure that the people of the Western Cape have the ability to have their say about their future. Had the DA kept their promise to call a referendum on Cape Independence, there would be no need for the Referendum Party to have been formed - its sole objective would have been achieved.
As such, a vote for the Referendum Party is a direct vote for what you and I already want, and one step closer to a bright future. It is up to each of us to summon the courage to break free from the burdens on the past by endorsing the Referendum Party at the ballot box.
