Teraco, a subsidiary of Texas-based digital infrastructure real estate investors Digital Realty, plans a significant expansion of its data centre CT2 in Brackenfell.
This will increase its increasing its critical IT electrical load from 20MW to 50MW, in order to meet growing demand from enterprise customers and hyperscale cloud providers, in line with increased digital infrastructure projects between the Cape and the United States in recent years, as well as the growing local digital market.
The project is scheduled i early 2025, iae facility incorporating environmentally sustaintainable measures to reduce the impact of their cooling systems and water management designs.
The upgrade will include eight data halls, bringing the centre up to a total of 16 halls with 18,000m2 of operational space, and will be connected to their primary centre, CT1.
The expansion will bring Teraco's total critical power load in South Africa to 185MW across various campuses. The decision to invest in Cape Town is driven by its status as a hub for digitally connected enterprises and its strategic location for major subsea cable systems, which received a major expansion commitment under provincial-level trade deals struck by Premier Alan Winde three years ago.
