UCT scores third consecutive victory at World Varsity Rugby Cup

The University of Cape Town’s rugby team, the Ikey Tigers, have secured their third consecutive victory at the 2023 World University Rugby Cup.

The celebration unfolded at Glenara, where Professor Emeritus and interim Vice-Chancellor Reddy lauded the team's diligence, attributing their success to unwavering dedication. Expressing gratitude, he commended the players and staff for their role in shaping UCT into a paragon of excellence.

In their final match in France, the Tigers beat Bordeaux University 17–3 to take the Cup. Professor Reddy, acknowledging his late engagement with the team's exploits after their 2023 FNB Varsity Cup final defeat.

Johan van Rhyn, Chairperson of the Players Committee, extended his congratulations to the university's sports community for their support during the tournament, ans emphasized the significance of this three-tournament winning streak, seeing it as a catalyst for future triumphs, including reclaiming the Varsity Cup.

Jonathan Biderman-Pam, former director of the Ikey Tigers, shed light on the logistical and financial intricacies involved in facilitating the team's success, expressing gratitude for the university's generous donation and sponsors' support.

Luthando Woji, the Ikey Tigers' captain, described leading the team to victory as an honor and a humbling experience. Despite Head Coach Tom Dawson-Squibb's inability to attend the World Cup due to personal commitments, his philosophy of cultivating a joyful and motivating club culture resonated with the team, contributing to their success.

Woji underscored the significance of achieving this milestone in the same year as the Springboks' triumph, expressing aspirations to extend their winning streak into the upcoming 2024 Varsity Cup season. The Ikey Tigers' triumph reverberates not only within the university but stands as a testament to their resilience and prowess on the global rugby stage.
