In response to escalating violent crime in South Africa, AfriForum has launched a comprehensive guide to assist citizens in legally obtaining a firearm licence. This step-by-step guide provides clear, practical instructions on the entire process, from acquiring a competency certificate to obtaining a licence and, ultimately, purchasing a firearm.
Available free of charge on AfriForum’s website, the guide aims to equip South Africans with the knowledge to become responsible firearm owners. It underscores the necessity of proper training and the responsible handling of firearms, while emphasising the gravity of gun ownership and the paramount importance of safety.
The guide breaks down the legal process into three key stages:
1. **Securing a competency certificate:** The initial requirement, where applicants must meet stringent legal and safety criteria.
2. **Applying for a firearm licence:** Detailed instructions on the documentation and procedural requirements for a successful application.
3. **Acquiring a firearm:** Ensuring prospective owners are fully trained and equipped to handle their weapons responsibly.
AfriForum advocates that, amid rising crime rates, empowering law-abiding citizens to legally defend themselves could play a significant role in bolstering community safety. The organisation asserts that the right to self-defence is becoming increasingly vital.
"In a country beset by alarming rates of violent crime, we believe that more responsible citizens should be armed and trained to protect themselves, their families, and their communities," said Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s chief spokesperson for Community Safety. "Our guide demystifies the often complex and intimidating process of lawful firearm ownership, empowering South Africans to take control of their safety in an informed and responsible manner."
