Michelle Wasserman, of Western Cape branch of Action SA, has called on the Public Protector to investigate Provincial Deputy Speaker Beverley Schäfer for her alleged failure to implement the state attorney's recommendations regarding her expenses. Schäfer was found guilty of using a luxury vehicle, incurring R158,000 in fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

Action SAis concerned about a lack of progress in addressing the matter, and has requested an investigation into whether both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker violated expected standards for public office bearers regarding accountability.

This follows a similar expenses scandal involving now-leader of the DA in the Western Cape, Tertius Simmers, who was found to be receiving a ministerial housing allowance despite already owning three residential properties.

Action SA has recently brought charges against the DA and the City of Cape Town for mismanagement of its wastewater systems, specifically for dumping raw sewage into the bay. While new projects for upgrading this infrastructure has been commissioned, the upgrades come after more than a decade of sewage dumping.

Action SA is staffed by many former DA members, including party leader Herman Mashaba, and senior members Atholl Trollip and Michael Beaumont, known primarily for the affair between John Steenhuisen and Beaumont's former wife.
